Skills:

  • Understanding initial sounds.
  • Understanding alphabetical order.

Materials Needed:

  • None!

Directions:

  • Have the children stand and follow along with you. To begin this exercise, put your arms in the air and say "a." Touch your shoulders and make the short a sound. Touch your toes and name something that begins with the short a sound, such as "apple."
  • Put your hands in the air and say "b." Touch your shoulders and make the b sound.Touch the floor and say something that starts with that sound (e.g., "bubble"). Exercise as you work through the alphabet.

Adaptations:

  • Point to the letters on a chart or other display as you say them.
  • Spell out words using phonercise.
  • Challenge children to name words in a particular category as you phonercise. For example, they could name just animals, foods, or actions.
  • Let the children make letters using their bodies, or divide them into small groups to form letters with their bodies.
