The Complete Book of Activities, Games, Stories, Props, Recipes, and Dances for Young ChildrenWhen my friends and I go to the zoo, our favorite spot is the monkey house. We love to watch the funny things the monkeys do and I think perhaps the monkeys like to watch us, too. I wonder if they think we are as funny as we think they are. I am never really sure exactly who is watching whom.
Hey, I have an idea. You pretend to be the monkeys, and I’ll be me. I’ll show you what happens at the zoo. Listen carefully because sometimes you will be leading. Remember, you are the monkeys. (The teacher is the storyteller and the children are the monkeys. Suit actions to words.)
When we run up to the monkey cages we clap our hands with glee. In no time at all, the monkeys are clapping their hands, too.
They jump up and down and so do we.
We make funny faces and so do they.
They turn in circles and so do we.
We swing our arms monkey style (randomly all around) and they do the same.
They lift their legs up monkey style (out to the side and up and down) and we do the same.
We scratch our heads and they scratch their heads.
They scratch under their arms and we scratch under our arms.
We pull our ears and they pull theirs.
They sit on the ground and count their toes.
We pretend to do the same.
Then they laugh tee-hee-hee, tee-hee-hee.
That makes us roll on the ground with laughter.
Guess what the monkeys do then…
You got it. They roll on the ground with laughter.
Have you ever seen the monkeys at the zoo? You really must go to see them.
When you get there, be sure to play our funny game of Monkey See, Monkey Do.
